Rafael Alfredo Moreira Dias

Rafael Alfredo was born in Minas Gerais in 1958.

He started to attend the painting studio of the Espaço Aberto ao Tempo (Space Open to Time, EAT) in 1989.

He was an excellent painter, with an ability to create images that were very similar to American abstractionism. He didn’t deal with form, but rather with the formation of images. He threw paint on canvases and discovered plasticity at the edge of chance and intention. But he added something to this gesture that differentiated him: the use of different materials and paints that, at different speeds, fused or became isolated from one another. There was a release of energy on the canvas that did not belong to the painter’s gesture, but to the material itself.
