Study Group

2025 Edition

Theme: Images from the Unconscious – Possible Readings

The Museum Study Group, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of its founder Nise da Silveira, highlights one of the pillars of its work: the study of images as a way of understanding the inner world, the deep layers of our psyche.

Throughout 2025, different readings of images will be presented: psychology, psychiatry, art therapy, etc., taking as a starting point Nise da Silveira’s books “Imagens do Inconsciente”, “O Mundo das Imagens” and “Benedito”.

The meetings are free and open to all interested who can participate in person at the MII headquarters and online via the museum’s YouTube channel, where the meetings are recorded.

Coordination: Profs. Maddi Damian, Walter Melo and Paula Barros.

A Short History

In 1968, Dr. Nise da Silveira held a series of lectures at the Museu das Imagens do Inconsciente for medicine and psychology students and other interested parties. The themes of these meetings were directly related to the work produced in the painting and sculpture studios. These meetings were the starting point for the creation of the museum’s Study Group, whose main objective was to study the psychotic process and its relationship with universal themes of the human psyche, as well as to monitor the evolution of clinical cases through spontaneous artistic expression.
